You got to know when to hold 'em

Just heard a wonderful John Humphreys interview with a woman from the ASA talking about how they propose to regulate TV advertising of gambling. The ASA say they're going to regulate it just like they did drinking. It won't be allowed to appeal to any socially irresponsible impulses, apparently. Humphreys makes the not unreasonable point that the impulses which might lead anyone to gamble are essentially irresponsible.

  1. Like booze it will have to be advertised without refering to it's USP ie drink beer it helps you get drunk and helps people cop off. It will be gambling without suggesting you might win money.

  2. Why is gambling suddenly so popular? You'd think it'd just been invented they way everyone's carrying on.

Blame the lottery. Gambling used to be one of the great unmentionables until John Major and co decided that a National Lottery would be a good way to raise money for charity, thus saving the government the trouble of doing it. Once they'd decided to launch that with a high-profile TV advertising campaign, the genie was out of the bottle.
