Mark Ellen, Fraser Lewry and I got together yesterday at Fraser's place. We'd been talking about doing a podcast for ages. Largely because we enjoyed doing them and it was an excuse to get together and catch up. The beauty of a podcast is that you can just reactivate the old feed and in theory the people who used to get it can get it again. You can get it on iTunes here and not on iTunes here.
I don't know whether there'll be any more. It depends whether we feel like it. Or if somebody feels like paying us to do it. Over the last year a few people have suggested ways we could bring it back in a different form, maybe polish it up a bit and get a sponsor or sell it as a download. I've never seen a way you could do this without losing the soul of it. I'm not being precious about it and I'm certainly not saying that we wouldn't look at trying to make it a commercial concern but for the moment we can't see a way. So we'll do it if and when we feel like it and we won't take any notice of what anyone says about it, which is always a nice feeling.
On this one we talked about Mark's book, which comes out in May. We've got two Word In Your Ear events where I'll be talking to Mark about it. They've both sold out. We also talked about Ben Watt's brilliant Romany and Tom, which he'll be talking about at our next Word In Your Ear event, a week on Friday at the Slaughtered Lamb. This evening also features the country duets of My Darling Clementine and the vocal stylings of Vinny Peculiar. Last few tickets here.
What else? We also touched on Who Is Harry Nilsson? and Beware of Mr. Baker, rock docs that came out a long time ago, I know, but we can only talk about them when we get round to seeing them. Or when the subject comes up. Oh and apologies for suggesting Donna Godchaux is no longer with us. That's the problem with spontaneity.
Look forward to hearing the podcast,I listen to many podcasts, but it will be great to hear a Word Podcast again, even if it is just a one off. Excellent news!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed it. Thanks for doing it & giving me a list of things to follow up on.
ReplyDeleteWonderful news: a new Word podcast!
ReplyDeleteDavid, whatever you decide to do, it's great to have y'all back. I've a hedge that needs trimming and weather permitting, I'm looking forward to listening to you chaps, chuckling a lot and not noticing the tedium of the task, this weekend.
ReplyDeleteHugely enjoyable, thanks chaps! Your link to Mark's book is broken though.
ReplyDeleteThink that's fixed now.
ReplyDeleteGreat, really enjoyed it. Like having some long-lost old pals back. Hope you get the chance to do another one soon.. And Mark's book sounds like a rollicking good read.
ReplyDeleteGreat news, David. I wrote a blog post when you finished and barely a month goes by without my email inbox receiving a request asking if I know where people can get the past episodes.
ReplyDeleteHi Guys - great & thanks. Looking forward to listening to the podcast.
ReplyDeleteCheers for now - Lunaman
Absolutely delighted that you've made the effort to put another one out. Look forward to listening to it on a 450 mile trip to Scotland this weekend.
ReplyDeleteGreat to have you back! I have an 8 month old daughter and I have spent many disturbed nights listening to the whole back catalogue again :) I hope you do choose to continue this, even if it's just one a month. As someone said earlier, it's like having some old friends round for a chat who you haven't seen for ages. Lovely stuff!
ReplyDeleteI'm not proud of this fact, but it is what it is: I don't think I've listened to a single podcast since Word went off air two years ago. I am happy to say that I am about to listen to one again. It wasn't the medium I was bored with, it was the message, clearly.
ReplyDeleteJust opened up my itunes to get my usual weekly podcast downloads and happened to notice a Word episode automatically downloading. I can't describe my joy at the realisation that the old band were back together.
ReplyDeleteIf you can imagine if Leppo had rejoined the Rutles. I'm sure it would be on an equal par.
As an adjunct to your hen night story, I can confirm that my friend arranged for a group of about twenty of us, all in our early thirties, to visit a West End nightclub on a stag do ten years ago. During the daytime meeting with the club manager a fortnight before, he was told that our named party would be guaranteed entry if we came in groups of five, suited and booted, and were sober.
ReplyDeleteI was in the advance party. We had followed the advice to the letter. We gave the party name. The reply: 'Sorry lads, not your night'.
We went to the pub.

ReplyDeleteBloody marvellous to have you back - what do we need to do to persuade you to do more...
ReplyDeleteWhat Sharrow said. Definitely.
ReplyDeleteDavid, just to make you aware, it seems very difficult to make a comment sometimes here due to the robot challenge thing which doesn't seem to work properly sometimes. Not sure if anyone else has the same problem?
ReplyDeleteI know that people sometimes comment twice, which may indicate that they've had a problem, but it doesn't seem to happen all the time. I'll turn it off for a while and then switch it back on again the minute somebody gets abusive.
ReplyDeleteOk. I always read blogs etc on my iphone but I'm sure that's very common these days so shouldn't cause a problem.
ReplyDeleteI don't usually post comments though but my last two attempts have both needed at least 4 attempts which is very frustrating. In fact I've switched to my laptop to make this comment as doing so again from iphone wasn't working.
Might just be me, but I suspect not and it's a shame if some readers are maybe giving up after a few attempts to comment - particularly as we're all as giddy as schoolgirls with another podcast.
Thanks so much for doing this. Can't tell you how much it warmed me to be back with you guys in the pod!
ReplyDeleteNice one chaps!
ReplyDeleteWelcome back!
ReplyDeleteStrangely, was just listening to a Word Podcast from Sept 2008 - on week of Lehman Bros crash which we now know to be a water-shed moment.
This is fantastic news. Enough said.
ReplyDeleteHaving mentioned the documentary "Who is Harry Nilsson?" that reminded me I caught the end of the recent showing on Sky Arts and it concludes with Eric Idle singing a Nilsson related song including the line (I paraphrase) "You can have coke (pause)....... a-cola with Harry". I then compared to a recoding I had of the slightly longer BBC Imagine version of the same documentary where this line was edited from the Eric Idle performance. I thought a curious editing choice on version shown on the BBC.
ReplyDeletep.s. I was rude not to say fantastic to have a new podcast to savor!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much guys. Still on the weight-watchers diet I see and taking all the recent advice about reducing sugar seriously. Lovely to hear you all again!
ReplyDeleteAt the risk of blowing smoke ... I happened upon some old Word podcasts when I got Amazon icloud. Just listened to the one with Nick Lowe where he tells his Dave Edmonds/Keith Richards story. What a great great joy.
ReplyDeleteCan't you perhaps register as a charitable organisation to aid jaded Middle Aged men and start it up again?
How great was this to hear? Loved every minute of it...more, more, more, please!
ReplyDeleteWow, such a great suprised to have this show up in my feed. Your podcast was one of my favourites so thank you for this
ReplyDeleteGreatly missed and lovely to hear that there's at least a small risk of you doing more. Bottom line - if you want paying for it, count me in. Best wishes to all.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful to have a new Word Podcast again! God how I've missed them!
ReplyDeleteHugely enjoyable as always. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteWait, what? My favourite podcast is back and has been for months?!? Glorioski! Am binge downloading as I type. Long may you sail!
