Anthony Clare, whose death at the age of 64 has been announced, used to present "In The Psychiatrist's Chair" for Radio Four. One of his on-air "patients" was Ken Dodd. This was not long after he'd undergone an investigation for tax evasion. You knew the question was going to come eventually.
Clare: "I want to talk to you about money."
Doddy: (without missing a beat) "Why? Have you got some?"
a) They don't make comics like that any more
ReplyDeleteb) They don't make intelligent interviewers of the Clare ilk any more; those who aren't afraid of making themselves look foolish in the attempt to get something revealing out of the subject.
Another great Radio voice gone.

Three of my favourite broadcasters gone in less than a month. Very sad. My most vivid memory of Anthony Clare is the session he had with Jimmy Saville. He got absolutely nothing out of him whatsoever. It was fascinating in a squirmy sort of way. And all the more creepy for it.
