Word In Your Ear ventures out of London next Saturday to talk to Hugh Cornwell

If you haven’t been able to get to any of the Word In Your Ear events we’ve been running in London over the last few years and you’re within reach of Manchester you could come to a mini Word In Your Ear event which takes place next Saturday, November 16th.

As part of the Louder Than Words Festival, which is happening that weekend, I’m going to be talking to Hugh Cornwell. He’s going to be telling me what he thinks about rock journalists and in return I’m going to tell him a few home truths about rock musicians.

It promises to be an exchange brimming over with home truth and anecdotage. Come if you can. Tickets here.

  1. David, is there any chance you could record these events and let us in far flung places get a listen. It might come close to the Word podcasts that we've all been missing and for which we can find nothing up to replacing them.

  2. Paul, you're not the first to suggest the idea but I'm afraid it would be yet another of those things you can do today which are:
    a) more trouble than you think
    b) not worth it.
    Sorry.

  3. I interviewed Hugh for a couple of magazines last year. None of the Battered by Rock, 1000 yard stare of many musical veterans. His academic background seems as much a part of his manner as his tales and salty HORAs - he took ten minutes asking our waitress how were the burgers made and were the drink menu was sourced from

  4. With respect, it's not *that* difficult to do. Record it on a laptop using Adobe audition, load it to Mixcloud, forget about it. On the other hand, I suppose the absence of resultant revenue would account for factors both (a) and (more probably) (b)?

  6. I wasn't suggesting you couldn't. It's just having put huge amounts of work into podcasts in the pas for nothing I bristle a bit whenever someone suggests I might like to do just one more. I wouldn't stand in the way of anyone else who wanted to do it. But then I assume they would get the approval of anyone else involved in the show, which is only what I'd have to do.

  7. David, I can imagine that it is, much like in many walks of life, one of those things that seems simple but is in fact quite a hassle. As a photographer I know where you're coming from. Please take my enquiry as praise because, in all honesty, your podcasts and audio output have always been highly enjoyable and informative. Surely the BBC or somebody would make it worthwhile for you and Mr. Ellen to give us your Statler and Waldorf view of media and popular culture issues on a regular basis, 'twould be magic!!!

  8. Paul, there is more chance of Kiss FM signing me up for the breakfast show than there is of the BBC doing as you described.

  9. Well rest assured, if I were an Arabian prince I would be having none of your Rihanna or Rolling Stones. It'd be you two spouting off that I'd spend my millions on ;-)
Thanks for all the effort you put into those podcasts, they weren't fruitless in that, at least for me, they were showcases for the beauty and the art of simple conversation. No radio has given me such enjoyment as those podcasts did.
(What was that great slogan? " We talk bollocks so you don't have to!")

  10. Absence of revenue seems like a perfectly good reason for not doing something if it's what you do for a living
