Have we got enough bitter lemon?

Mum and Dad weren't big drinkers. However I remember that in the run-up to Christmas every effort was made to ensure that we were as well stocked with different varieties of alcohol as we were with food. Dad would wonder whether he needed to buy a fresh bottle of Cinzano while Mum checked that there was enough Lamb's Navy Rum to splash over the Christmas pudding. Then they would order a wide array of "splits", the small bottles of Schweppes Ginger ale or Indian Tonic that would be needed to administer drinks to everyone's requirements. They were terrified that somebody would ask for a Gin & It or Whisky Mac which they might not be able to provide.

Nobody caters like that any more, do they? I've just done our booze audit. We've got champagne, fizz, white, red and beer. Anyone who isn't happy with that can, quite frankly, whistle. Funny how while we've been growing fussier about food we've become less fussy about drink.

Happy Christmas.

  3. Sainsbury's brandy, the same bottle that's been on the go for the last couple of Crimbo's. And a new bottle of Jack Daniels. No mixers.

  9. In fact, I've got the lot, including a selection of Drambuie, Cointreau etc. And I can mix you a mean Snowball, should you so desire.
But then, I'm old school. Old School Alcohol-hic.

    Have a Merry Christmas!

  10. We've got a basic selection..do you remember when it was almost compulsory to have a home~built bar in the house? Unfortunately for mum and dad, a few mates and I {aged 11}, drained theirs dry one crazy day during a summer school holiday. Randomly someone had stuck a drawing pin in a bottle of lime cordial, which had to stay put once it was in. Mum's spider sense started to tingle when she came home and found the house almost clinically clean. But the full reveal didn't happen until dad's boss came round for dinner one saturday evening, and all the parents could offer was bare bottles and lime cordial with drawing pin etc....which was my cue to bolt off to my room

  11. Agreed apart from the current obsession with gin.Brother in Law hoping his stock of 6 different gins,3 types of tonic and numerous botanicals will be sufficient.

Happy Christmas and thanks for annual year of entertaining blogging.
