I'm no economist but....

....the first thing I heard this morning on the Today programme was a representative of the fishing industry saying "it no longer makes sense to fish because the cost of the fuel is greater than the value of the catch."

I thought to myself "I wonder if I'll remember this day."

  1. ...so expect the price of fish to rise. Then it'll make sense again. There's more than one variable term in the equation.

  2. At last, a conversation that may end up with a valid reason to say "what's that got to do with the price of fish?".

The problem is that demand for fish can be met by imports from places where stocks are higher, or quotas are more permissive. Hence the price of fish might not rise.

And anyhow, just how much do we like fish in this country anyway? If fish gets expensive, most families will eat cheap beef or factory chicken.

  3. I heard this on the farming programe [I get up at a really indecent hour] and as I understood it, it's because fish is sold at an auction so the fisherman can't simply put the price up everytime the fuel price increases. What will happen first is less fishermen rather than less fish.

  4. Given that everything will soon be fuelled from stuff we can grow, we can eat whatever we put into our engines. End of problem as long as we all want to be vegetarians.

  5. In fact the very fact that you can use corn to make fuel, is pushing the price of corn up in an unsustainable manner.

The only reasonable future for biofuel is the kind manufactured from the parts of the plant we can't eat.

Whatever the price, I'll keep fishing. Not for the money - just for the halibut.

  17. I haven't worked out what the porpoise of all this is. I suppose we should be grateful it's not on the Word website where we would be knee deep in music related fish puns by now... How about the Sole singers, Salmon Dave?!
