Never mind the inner man


I am thinking of introducing another meal into my daily routine because at the moment there are times of the day when I'm almost faint with hunger. Current routine is as follows:
  • rise at six, take tea and toast sometime during first hour
  • midway through morning (assuming working at home) more tea and toast
  • one a.m. lunch - something on toast (could a theme be emerging here?)
  • four o'clock - tea and a biscuit to stave off pangs
  • eight o'clock - cooked dinner
Clearly it's not enough. It's a routine first devised in my early twenties, when I used to get up at nine, and has failed to keep pace with my changing routine. But where should the additional meal go? And of what should it consist?

    You just need a bigger lunch I reckon, not another meal.

    Although it seems the most obvious, and although I don't always practice what I'm about to preach, all I can say is...

    "Eat your dinner earlier, fool."

    Oh and / or have something more substantial for mid-morning chow.

    Gosh, all that toast and biscuit, no wonder you're snacky. Don't they pay you much at The Word? Get some proper food, my friend :)

    tsk, tsk - a hearty breakfast (no, not a fry up), a light lunch (decent sandwich or similar), then a nice dinner with wine. What's so hard about that?

  6. You could always try getting up later. This way you can consolidate toast sessions one and two into a single session, before a big blowout for lunchtime toast.

    And maybe swapping dinner at eight for toast at five, seven, nine and eleven could satisfy those "I feel I need more meals" cravings?

  8. The wheat's not filling you up, Dave. No wonder you're hungry. Ideally, you should eat every three hours, even it's just a handful of nuts, or a boiled egg. Your breakfast, classically, lacks protein. You need egg or some fish for breakfast, that will set you up. Then a yoghurt or a crispbread with cheese or salad on it, mid-morning. Soup for lunch, with some nuts or seeds, bit of green veg. Snack mid-afternoon. Then dinner. Biscuits don't stave off pangs. They create pangs.

  9. Blimey, Andrew Collins is very impressive isn't he! I agree with him, a boiled egg or some bacon with your toast will satisfy you for longer and keep whole nuts and a bowl of fruit on your desk. M&S is in walking distance of the office for your lunch or you could always get a nice chicken salad on the way in. And always remember your daily 2.5 litres of water so you don't mix up thirst with hunger and keep your glowing skin!
