It may be something to do with euphemism. Calling someone a noun is to give a label to the whole of them, rather than identifying an aspect of the person. The same thing has happened in reverse with nouns that are now regarded as offensive. We now refer to children with special needs, rather than give them the noun ‘slow-learners’; only David Brent could ever talk about ‘the disabledes’ instead of people with disabilities.
