The systems guys quizzed the management and workforce at length about the complicated timekeeping, overtime and bonus systems and after a long time programming and fixing up a computer interface to a pile of notes, coins and envelopes they showed the resultant test paypackets to middle-management and union reps.<br /><br />Shock ensued - "they won't stand for that." "Why not, it's accurate and quick?"<br /> "Yes, but they get two pay packets a week. One with some level of pocket money and one they can hand over unopened to the wife."Dave Heasmanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03711280312725701746noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38548109.post-52811652100506684572012-08-30T09:40:35.616+01:002012-08-30T09:40:35.616+01:00We were paid in exactly the same way (brown sealed...We were paid in exactly the same way (brown sealed envelopes, cellophane window etc) by members of the wages staff who brought our wages neatly piled in a brown tray which they carried in front of them in exactly the same fashion as a waitress does.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03565202952790011951noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38548109.post-52788497975306626022012-08-30T08:53:45.902+01:002012-08-30T08:53:45.902+01:00Another metaphor which survives: in this part of t...Another metaphor which survives: in this part of the world (and in others, for all I know) certain women are described as "someone you wouldn't want to take an opened pay packet home to".legal_manhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15055350745732758526noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38548109.post-71319398034405538942012-08-30T08:25:47.973+01:002012-08-30T08:25:47.973+01:00Maybe more recently than you think - I had a holid...Maybe more recently than you think - I had a holiday job in the early 90s working in a factory for a large international firm, whose name you would certainly know, and I remember queuing in the canteen on Friday lunchtimes to get my brown envelope.danhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16205785145501427845noreply@blogger.com
